Equally Close to All Things

6-7th July 2019

On this retreat we will explore the innate quality of awareness as a foundation for cultivating clarity, understanding, and insight into our human experience. We will investigate how, through practice, we can develop insight into the causes of stress and the causes of genuine happiness, and examine what it means to abide with kindness and awareness in the midst of life, equally close to all things.

The day will be held in silence and include guided and silent meditation practice, teachings and time for questions.

Suitable for experienced and newer students to meditation.

Venue: Whirlow Spirituality Centre, Whirlow Grange Drive, Sheffield S11 9RX. Map

Registration from 09.30am: Retreat/teaching from 10am to 4pm both days

Hot drinks provided, please bring your own packed lunch.

Zohar Lavie

Zohar Lavie has practised meditation since 1995. In 2004 she co-founded SanghaSeva and she now spends most of her time facilitating retreats that offer service as a spiritual path. Since 2006 she has been teaching on retreats and dharma gatherings in India, Europe and Israel.

Unfortunately we have had to cancel the previously advertised Sangha meal on Saturday evening but we hope you will share a cup of tea with us at the end of the retreat day.

What to expect on a day retreat

For newcomers to meditation in general, or Insight Meditation in particular:

Day retreats take place mostly in a setting of companionable silence, including during the lunch period. There is a chance to connect with other participants at the beginning and end of the day, and during the day there will be some opportunities for questions and discussion with the teacher. Silence offers an opportunity to attend to one’s own experience without the need to be anyone for other people.

You will be asked to sit quietly for periods of up to 30 minutes, with varying amounts of guidance. These sittings are interspersed with periods of walking and movement.

We recognise that this level of silence may be challenging for newcomers and is not always suitable for everyone at every time. If you have any concerns or wonder whether a retreat is the right thing for you at this time, you are welcome to get in touch with us.

Booking links

The teaching is offered freely in accordance with the Insight Meditation tradition. During the retreat you will be invited to make a voluntary contribution (Dana) for the teachings. Please read more about Dana here. Payment taken below is toward the cost of running the retreat.

The Sponsor rate includes a £5 donation to help support all to attend, regardless of means.

The Standard rate covers the cost of the venue, administration and teacher’s travel costs.

The Supported rate is offered for those whose income is too low to pay the standard rate.

The Freely Given rate is offered to make our events as accessible and welcoming as possible. We recognise that in the current political and economic climate many struggle to pay for food and housing, let alone meditation retreats. We offer this rate particularly for those who have little or no financial support, for example: young people, people who are homeless or vulnerably housed, asylum seekers or those who are living on state benefits.

(Our Retreatant Support Fund supports those who access our Freely Given and Supported Rates – no one will be turned away through lack of funds. There will also be an opportunity during the retreat to contribute to the Retreatant Support Fund which helps us to keep our retreats accessible to all, regardless of means.)

Contact us if you don’t have a UK bank account or if you’d like to pay a different amount.

Please note that our online booking system (except for £0 option) uses a site called GoCardless that enables one-off payments to be taken via the direct debit system.

When you book using this system, GoCardless will e-mail you immediately to indicate that you have been set up as a new direct customer. This e-mail confirms that any further transactions (beyond this particular booking) will need to be authorised. This means that only the payment you have set up with this booking will be taken. You will receive another e-mail from GoCardless (usually within a few days) confirming the amount and timescale of the single direct debit. The money will normally be taken from your account about a week after booking.
