Sheffield Insight Meditation New Year Retreat 2017

Keeping company with the beautiful

Three day retreat with Metta, including optional Alexander Technique with Lucy Ascham.

Thursday 28th December, Friday 29th December and Saturday 30th December 2017

At Sheffield Quaker Meeting House, S1 2EW

Thank you for booking on the retreat. Here are some practical details.

Please come in time to register from 9.15am on your first day.

The retreat will start at 10.00am every day and finish at around 5pm.

Telephone contact number

Please text your name and a mobile contact number to the following number

07748 271470. In the event of any last minute changes we can then contact you by phone as well as by e-mail.

The retreat will take place in a general atmosphere of silence, including the lunch period, although there will be teachings, and opportunities for questions and discussion. At the end of each day, there’ll be an opportunity to stay for a cuppa and talk with fellow retreatants.

In order to create and maintain the quietude of the retreat and to support each others’ practice, we ask that all retreatants switch off phones and other mobile devices. If you need to be contactable in case of emergency please, please pass on the Sheffield Insight phone number 07748 271 470. This will be checked regularly.

Hot drinks will be available at registration and throughout the day.

Please bring your own packed vegetarian lunch on each day that you attend. An oven and microwave oven will be available for warming up food.  The venue is in central Sheffield so it is possible to buy lunch/sandwiches nearby if necessary during the lunchbreak.

Meditation Equipment

You are welcome to bring your own equipment for sitting meditation although there will be some equipment available to borrow.

Mats, cushions and some stools will be available for sitting meditation and there are plenty of chairs. You may wish to bring a blanket or shawl although there will be some blankets available to borrow. If you would like to participate in the Alexander Technique sessions, please bring a yoga mat to lie on if you have one ( some will be available to borrow) and if possible 2 or 3 paper back books, ( these can be used to provide adjustable head support).

We will not be wearing shoes in the meditation hall and ask that you leave them outside the room. You may wish to bring slippers/indoor shoes. Please wear comfortable, warm layers for sitting meditation.

Jobs during the retreat

We are self-supporting during the retreat, so to help it run smoothly, we ask that you sign up for jobs such as cup wash up, bell ringing, etc. The sign-up sheet will be on the reception desk. If you are able to help us clear up at the end of the last day, this would be very useful.

The fee that you have paid covers the running costs for the retreat – the hire of the venue, teacher’s travelling and accommodation expenses, insurance, publicity, etc.

In the Insight Meditation tradition the teachings are offered freely. You will be invited to participate in the spirit of generosity (dana) and to make a donation, which will be given to the teachers – this can be a cheque or cash. The amount is left to your discretion. A talk will be given during the retreat about the tradition and practice of dana.

There will also be an opportunity to donate to our retreatant support fund, which helps ensure that our retreats are accessible to anyone, regardless of means.

Cancellation and queries

If you have any queries about the retreat or need to cancel please contact us by email or text 07748 271 470. If you do need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible. Our cancellation policy is on our website.
